Kmart Florida Store List

Kmart has been in Florida since the early 1960's. Once America's greatest and most powerful discount store, the big red K has slowly been shriveling away since their bankruptcy in 2002. At one time, there were over 170 Kmart stores in Florida. As of Early 2021, only 4 remain (Miami, Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West), and who knows how much longer it will be until those 4 finally close as well. Below you will find a list of all Kmart stores that once operated in Florida (I may be missing some original stores that were replaced in the late 80's and early 90's though - feel free to leave a comment if you see a store is missing).

  1. Outstanding work on this list! You even got Charlotte Harbor's and Punta Gorda's old stores (which I only found out about recently and was surprised to know about it.)

Some info you forgot to add:
Store #4886 (my former local store) closed for good in April 2017.
Store #3249 closed in 2009; still vacant.
Store #3464 closed in 2008 and became a Hobby Lobby in 2013.
Store #3457 closed in early 2017.
Store #9511 also closed early this year, I believe.

If possible, maybe you should add opening dates too. There is some in this table (mainly ones that are still open or closed recently):

I think we may need to do some digging for the rest, however.

    1. Thanks! I found quite a few long forgotten about Kmart locations for this table (like that Charlotte Harbor one - it actually took me a while to figure out exactly where that one was since there isn't much about it online). The original Englewood store (#9581) is pretty interesting too since it really hasn't been touched since Kmart left, other than being a short-lived car museum back in the late 2000's.

As I was making this, I tried to keep the notes as simple as possible in order to get it ready in time to post. My goal was to add closings for all stores up to the bankruptcy rounds and just keep track of when relocations happened, in addition to any other oddities I took note of. I know there's a lot more that could be added, it's just a matter of when I can get around to adding more.

  2. I think Dead and Dying retail would be very interested to see this list. I do wonder if there are more such extensive lists of Kmarts in other states such as this one. Amazing the number of stores which were once around. There is such a great amount of interest for this. Sarah Canada

  3. You also forgot one detail:
The Kmart at 225 S TYNDALL PKWY in CALLAWAY, FLORIDA opened in 1982 and closed in either 2012 or 2013.

  4. I came across your blog while trying to locate store numbers for the 2003 closings. Thank you for posting!
Been putting together a listing of all stores, categorized by store type, and building dimensions/sq ft. I worked for K-mart for 9 years in the 80's from cashier to Assistant Manager and have always been interested in the various store types that were opened. If anyone has an interest in data I've put together, please email me at JMF2100@aol.com.

  5. Your years for closing are wrong for stores:
9824 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla. 32225

    11311 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa, Fla. 33612

850 Apollo Blvd., Melbourne, Fla. 32935

    6735 S. US Hwy. 1792, Fern Park, Fla. 32730

3521 Thomasville Rd., Tallahassee, Fla. 32308

According to the Associated Press, printed on September 8, 1994, those stores were closed in February, 1995, not 1994. Here's a link to Kmart's announcement as reported by the Associated Press: https://www.apnews.com/39778fd638ca4182cc709f878b0b900e

  6. Looks like that old Lauderhill store was #4279, according to this: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-1971-03-10/pdf/FR-1971-03-10.pdf (page 56). This is an incredible list, by the way!

    1. Thanks for tracking that down for me! (I've added that store number to the list). Glad you like it!

    2. Glad I could help! I was also able to find two other Florida stores that I don't see on your list:
#4085, at 5308 N. Davis Hwy. in Pensacola, which opened in 1964 and appears to be the first Kmart in the state, closed sometime in the late 1980s
#7105, at Hillsborough Square (6730 Memorial Hwy.) in Tampa, which opened in 1981 and was replaced by #7505 in 1993
What type of sources do you use to put this together? I've been trying to compile a national list for a while now just based on Google searches and digitized newspapers, and I've gotten pretty far but I still have a lot of gaps to fill.

    3. I've added those other stores, thanks for finding them! I figured there were some that closed a really long time ago that slipped under my radar.

The main source I used to put this list together was a list of all the Kmart stores in Florida from 1996, which I pulled out of one of the state's databases (business licences maybe, but I don't remember exactly). From there I just began to fill in stores that opened after 1996 through online searches, and used the Florida Official Records databases from each county to figure out the stores that closed prior to 1996. The Official Records contain all the old store leases and other property related documents. In Florida, it's required by law that each county provides these records online for free public viewing, and most counties have records going back through the early 80's online (some larger counties go back even further). Ohio has a similar law I believe, but other places are hit or miss with their records, sometimes hiding them behind paywalls or not having them online whatsoever. If you can get access to a county's official records search, the documents in there can be helpful in your research.

  7. Didn't KMart have a store on Hillsborough Ave where Home Depot is now? I don't see it on the list. Sorry to be a pain...

  9. My wife andnI worked at KMart in college during its glory days. It has been sad watching Lampert rape and pillage this once great company. The biggest mistake was lack of location movement. There stores primarily opened in middle class neighborhoods in the 1960s on. As those areas aged, KMart stood pat instead of building new stores in better areas. Walmart did build those stores, and along with their supply chain genius to become the juggernaut they are today.
