Winn-Dixie to Aldi Conversions - Rolling List

List of Winn-Dixie stores converting to Aldi

Your source for continuing coverage of the Aldi-Southeastern Grocers merger.

Last updated:  November 13, 2024

Following the recent news of Aldi's completed acquisition of all Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets, we have now begun to see plans to convert several SEG locations to the German discount format trickle out.  With this, your Southeastern Retail Bloggers have decided to compile a rolling list of all stores we've uncovered that are set to change as part of the "negotiated takeover".  All of the locations below have been independently verified by the MFR team using either official building permits, construction plans listed on bid sites, Aldi's website, or other news outlets.  We plan to update this list as new stores are uncovered.

Current Count

As of the last update, we have confirmed that 71/370 Winn-Dixie stores and 2/25 Harveys stores have been put up for conversion.

Additionally, take a look at this map of all Aldi, Harveys, and Winn-Dixie locations as of the closing of the merger and see if you can predict which stores will be the next to convert.  Feel free to leave any ideas down in the comments or give us a shout if you find news of another store that we have missed in the list above!

In an unexpected twist, it appears that Aldi plans to construct liquor stores of its own in Florida, marking a first for the company.  Plans for the conversion of Winn-Dixies #2413 in Tampa and #2527 in Apollo Beach reveal existing Winn-Dixie liquor stores being rebadged and relocated to the new Aldi side of the buildings.  This poses the question of whether Aldi intends to operate the liquor stores itself or lease them out to a third party.  Regardless, it appears that the German discounter has long-term ambitions for the lucrative alcohol market in the state of Florida.

Furthermore, the MFR team has confirmed that Winn-Dixie Liquors #0505 in Panama City Beach continues to operate status quo despite the adjacent supermarket having closed in August.  Its unclear whether or not other affected liquor stores will follow suit.

Winn-Dixie #2527 Conversion Plans - Exterior Elevation featuring relocated liquor store

Winn-Dixie #0197 | Liquor #0150 | Gainesville, FL

Winn-Dixie #0488 | Liquor #0505 | Panama City Beach, FL

Winn-Dixie #0506 | Liquor #0513 | Pensacola, FL

Winn-Dixie #0720 | Liquor #0722 | Englewood, FL

Winn-Dixie #2309 | Liquor #2310 | Ormond Beach, FL

Winn-Dixie #2404 | Liquor #2405 | Bradenton, FL

Winn-Dixie #2413 | Liquor #2414 | Tampa, FL

Winn-Dixie #2433 | Liquor #2434 | Tampa, FL

Winn-Dixie #2491 | Liquor #2492 | Arcadia, FL

Winn-Dixie #2527 | Liquor #2528 | Apollo Beach, FL

Additional details and liquor stores will be noted as they are revealed.  In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment below if you have more information on this breaking news.

  1. They better not dare touch Store #355 in Boca Raton!

    1. All bets are off because I honestly don't know what Aldi will end up doing. At least 355 seems like a well-kept store from pictures and has a competitive edge to Aldi with its expanded Kosher sections. There also seem to be several Aldi stores nearby. Regardless, I'd say nearby #345 and #349 are safe for the time being since they are right next door to an Aldi!

    2. I remember when Store #291 opened, taking up a former Publix when it relocated across U.S. Highway 441. A new store right in the middle of the Great Recession, too! I never understood why Store #345 in Deerfield Beach remained open while #207 down the street in Pompano Beach and at a more visible and trafficked intersection closed. In retrospect, just as well I suppose, because the latter would have been further from an existing Aldi, therefore more venerable.

With that about a kosher section, the same applies to Store #291 in Aventura. It wouldn't surprise me if Aldi converts one of the Hallandale Beach stores further north, however.

    3. Unless I'm looking at the wrong store (and my Spanish skills have gotten that rusty), it looks like WD #291 opened in 2004 in a building that WD had also occupied several years earlier. Publix #30, which was replaced in 2017, just moved across the parking lot to #1558 when it closed.

Regardless, it is cool to see the Kosher section in WD #291 as well!

    4. Forgive me for being numerically challenged, because I meant Store #349 in my first recollection.

    5. Yes, that makes much more sense! WD #349 replaced Publix #364. It's crazy to see how WD gutted the store, too. From the pictures, it looks like the terrazzo floors and the street numbers on the window are some of the only things left.

Maybe the recession is what resulted in so few of those "transformational" Winn-Dixies from opening. It's a shame because the two I've been to were very nice!

  2. Here in MS the D'iberville WD is closing 8/26/24 it looks like shelves are already thinning I hate it and I hate WMart.Rouses is about to open in the old Biloxi location of WD which closed about 8/7 years ago.I was talking with a team member today if Rouses made the Gulfport/Pass road store succeed which was once a WD then alot of the fault goes to the upper MGMT of WD not providing a good profit model for success. I have seen in the last 50years Delchamps-->WinnDixie-->Aldi and having to pay for bags turns me right their Rouses will be my new go to store I want Southern not germany.

    1. Thanks for the tip! I stopped by that store a few weeks back (ironically, just before the news dropped) and noticed a few shelves on the freezer aisle were strangely vacant. I wasn't really shocked when the news broke, but do feel bad for the local shoppers. Despite the dated interior, the store still felt clean and cared for; the staff was also very kind. I agree that it is a shame how regional grocers seem to be disappearing from the Southeast. Maybe Publix will see this as an opportunity to move into the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

  3. The Harveys on 2261 Edgewood Ave N (Store #1689) in Jacksonville is converting to Aldi according to several sources. I was sent to this store twice for work purposes to fill in for another employee at the company I work for. This store was one of the worst stores (across all chains) I've ever been to - both times it was not clean (there were plenty of dead flies in the coolers, including one on a case of Budweiser), smelled bad (the first time there was a rotten meat smell that lingered across three of the aisles, the second time there was a smell of burnt grease buildup in the deli hood vent), and not well maintained (multiple lights burned out throughout the store). Hopefully Aldi will maintain this location much better than SEG did.

    1. Thanks for the tip! It looks like the Jacksonville Daily Record picked up this story shortly after your comment went up, so it seems that they will follow through with this. I'm not surprised to hear that this store was in bad shape when you saw it or that it is converting because it seems like all of the Jacksonville Harveys stores are just former Winn-Dixies that were underperforming and converted to the Harveys name to give them a more discount look. I think the Harveys stores which date back to Delhaize at least tend to be in a bit better shape. I hope Aldi will maintain it better, and I'm curious where will be the next Harveys to go.

  4. The Avon Park Winn Dixie is under planning to turn into Aldi

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for the tip – it looks like the local news hasn't even picked up that one yet! I didn't realize that the Avon Park store has not remodeled since 2003 until digging deeper into it, which probably means it wasn't doing great; I think it is one of eight stores to still have some form of Marketplace interior from the 1990's, and the third so far to make this list. It also looks like the building began its life as JC Penny and was converted to WD in 1994 while the latter presumably moved from the Big Lots space next door.

Anyhow, that's unfortunate how the people in Avon Park will either have to settle for Walmart or drive to North Sebring if they want a full service supermarket.

    4. Thank you for the tip! I can confirm that the Nine Mile store in Pensacola will convert to an Aldi based on a permit filed with the county earlier this month.

      Delete
    5. I wonder if Aldi will be taking over all stores outside of Florida, working their way south

      Delete
    6. That seems highly unlikely considering how I can think of several Alabama and Georgia Winn-Dixies that are within a 1/4 mile to a 1/2 mile from an existing Aldi. If Aldi doesn't keep these locations in operation as W/Ds, I foresee them being sold off to the highest bidder.

  6. What the heck does “Down Down” shown in the addresses of store converting mean?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm honestly surprised you are the first to ask! That column refers to the era when Winn-Dixie last remodeled the store. The "Down Down" paint and interior décor from those stores coincided with Winn-Dixie's extensive "Prices Down and Staying Down" marketing campaign, meaning they were last remodeled between 2016-2020 while any stores marked "Winn Win" indicate the store was remodeled between 2020-2023. Many theorized Aldi would target older Marketplace stores last remodeled in the 1990's or early-2000's; however, that seems to not be the case since the Brunswick store received a thorough remodel in 2023.

    2. That includes lake wales Winn Dixie it was just remodeled last year they just throw their money out of the window but glad these buildings isn’t sitting empty for too long even half of the building is empty

  7. Someone is posting permit appli actions. I think that doesn't necessarily mean conversion it could mean remodel. What so you think. The latest one is for Tampa Store on Dale Mabury.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you have a link to these permit applications/posts? If they do exist, they most certainly mean a conversion. The Dale Mabry store in Tampa was remodeled during the "Down Down" era and would not be up for another remodel yet. It also appears that SEG has halted all outstanding remodels since the merger went through.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've wondered the same, but I haven't been able to confirm or deny whether the lack of online shopping means a store will close or if it means that store just lacks the service. I've tried to look up the trio of stores along US-19 in the Big Bend (#3, #104, & #168), and none of them seem to have online shopping last I checked. All three seem to me to be unlikely Aldi candidates, and #104 even received new road signs in June following damage from Hurricane Idalia. They will be interesting to keep an eye on.

    1. I'm honestly surprised by that too. Since most of the Harveys stores are in rural towns, they are typically more difficult to uncover advanced details on, but I still feel like I would have seen more come out by now. The South Douglas store (the former Winn-Dixie) is the only one thus far that I've found some potential evidence of a conversion; however, the details are extremely vague and not quite ready to confirm.

    1. I'm still not sure Aldi cares to enter some of the towns where Winn-Dixie is, but I agree that it seems more and more apparent that Aldi has little interest in continuing to operate Winn-Dixie as the company was in 2023 (especially in outlying areas). I'd imagine at this point that Aldi will take what it wants and sell the rest as a bundle or for scraps.

    1. Thanks for the heads up on #2480 - I've added that one to the list. That's also interesting about the liquor stores, but since WD considers the liquor stores somewhat independent from the main store (as they have their own store number), I guess that arrangement could work. It also would have been strange seeing a true Aldi liquor store, as I don't think Aldi runs any kind of liquor concept elsewhere in the country.

Any idea when all WD stores will be either converted to Aldi or closed outright?’

Do you think this will be Sears/Kmart style slow wind down or happen faster?

I think it will go quickly, I just don’t understand why Aldi continues to spend money on advertising and social fundraisers, etc for the WD banner. Why not use this spending for their own benefit?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think any Winn-Dixie is immune from closing / converting. That being said, I would hope that the other flagship, #7 at Baymeadows, as well as the new stores in Apopka and at Jacksonville Town & Country are the safest from becoming Aldis. I still don't think anything should be taken for granted as I have been putting in extra effort to document every Winn-Dixie I can. Hyde Park was certainly a surprise to me when it popped up, as was the initial Transformational store in Mobile.

Despite what it may look like, many of the people reading this post likely have more insider information than I do. I unfortunately have no idea when the conversions will stop, but we seem to have hit a lull in new store discoveries (which was likely aided by a seemingly premature release from Aldi). It wouldn't surprise me if Aldi continues to trickle out 2-3 stores per week until they get closer to 100 total conversions. After that, they may sit back and see how things go, or they may announce that they have sold off SEG in one form or another. It just still shocks me how A). Fresco y Más still appears to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of SEG and thus Aldi despite the "spinoff" and B). there are several otherwise-normal Winn-Dixie liquor stores operating next to a half-demolished supermarket on its way to becoming an Aldi (I saw one of these last week). This whole chain of events has been bizarre to say the least.

All that being said, I think we will know the fate of Winn-Dixie much sooner than it took for the dust to settle around Sears/Kmart. Aldi has made it clear that once they set a plan into motion, it happens fast. By this time next year, I predict we will have a very clear vision for the future of Winn-Dixie, good or bad.

That's a good point how Aldi is still spending money on advertising and has received a lot of positive surrounding its efforts with hurricane recovery. The pessimist part of me thinks this is to distract from the job loss headlines, but the optimist wants to think that Aldi wants to preserve the brand image so it is attractive to a potential buyer. In the end, Aldi is the only one who can answer that question.

    3. At least in other states, there are traditional supermarkets that can fill in the cracks, while in Florida, where there are the most Winn-Dixie stores, you only have Publix. After all of this over, I can only hope the remainder of the stores are spun off as Winn-Dixie, and/or sold/acquired by somebody willing to expand and able to stand against Publix, like C&S or even Kroger (third time's the charm?). Otherwise, the spaces end up turning into supermarkets with a foreign clientele, charter schools, or megachurches.

    4. North Sebring Winn Dixie isn’t even a mile away from Aldi but I’m not sure about the south Sebring Winn Dixie going to be a Aldi in the future since it’s is a former Sweetbay location too

      Delete
    5. That is for sure. I am a Publix shopper myself, but I've been very impressed by the transformation Winn-Dixie has pulled off over the last 5 years. If I lived near one, it would certainly be one of my regular stops. I, too, hope that Aldi doesn't end up leaving Publix as the only full-service chain in Florida because that doesn't turn out well for anybody. Any business needs competition or else it becomes complacent and sorry.

We'll have to wait and see about Sebring. Like you mention, the old Sweetbay store on the south side is the more likely candidate if either were to convert.

      Delete
    6. I do like Aldi, and I love Publix but will buy the same products from my local Winn-Dixie whenever I can... especially because my local Publix across the street is chaotic. Realistically, I don't think Winn-Dixie can ever compete with Publix heel-to-hell again, rather should assert itself as the neighborhood supermarket model that Publix doesn't always adhere to these days...

      Delete
    7. It's really interesting to see how Publix and Winn-Dixie have essentially swapped places over the last 20-30 years. Think about how Publix was mostly confined to Florida with several hundred stores, while Winn-Dixie was as far as Oklahoma and Ohio while boasting close to 1,500 locations. I agree that I don't ever see Winn-Dixie being a power house again, and it would be nice to see them fill in where Publix is lacking. If only Winn-Dixie could be what Harveys was under Delhaize leadership, I feel like things would be different now. Harveys used to specialize in 20,000 sq ft stores in rural areas but really catered to the local clientele. I've heard that Harveys stores were once the shining star of the company despite having since turned into nothing more than ugly yellow Winn-Dixies. It's probably not a good sign for the company that your Publix is chaotic while the Winn-Dixie is not because I think that is pretty common across SEG territory.

    1. Thanks! We already saw the news about #2558 (set to close next month based on job postings) and #305 (AFB found those permits a short time ago), but #2366 and #213 are new. I'm honestly shocked to see mention of #213 considering how that store only opened in 2022 following #288's closure between 2008-2011. With that, I can officially say that no Winn-Dixie, regardless of age or status, is safe. The best we can hope for at this point is for Kroger, Delhaize, or C&S to buy the remnants of the chain next year because Aldi obviously could care less about the chain. It's truly a shame to see how well SEG was doing with its turnaround, only to have the company dismantled a few years later. Aldi might as well have bought SEG out of the 2018 bankruptcy and saved everybody the effort.

I haven't yet found permits, etc. for #2366, but I'll still mark it down and keep an eye out!

Aldi also didn't specify a new set of doors to be carved out for the extra space, which I find interesting. I see several possibilities: one is that the intern who made the PowerPoints didn't know what was going on and included the liquor store, another is that the red outline was drawn to include the part of the store behind the liquor space, or the third is that Aldi changed its mind on keeping this liquor store.
