Grand Union Florida Store List



     Grand Union entered Florida in the early 1960's, and eventually grew to establish a decent presence throughout South Florida, the Tampa Bay area, and Southwestern Florida. Grand Union's Florida division was rather isolated from the rest of the chain for most of its existence, with GU's next closest division being in the Carolinas. By 1985, Grand Union had pulled out of Florida as GU began to focus their attention on their core New Jersey, New York, and New England markets as they began their period of decline (which ultimately led to their fatal 2001 bankruptcy). Even to this day there are still a few very recognizable former Grand Union stores floating around Florida (like the one pictured above). Below is a table of Grand Union's Florida locations from the year 1983. While it is not a comprehensive list of all of Florida's Grand Union stores (which it is not meant to be), I'd say this table comprises of the majority of their Florida locations, and is still a handy reference. Below the 1983 list is an additional table of some other Grand Union stores I found online that closed prior to 1983, which is a small bonus.

    704, 753, 775, 781, 783, and 788 were acquired by Kash n' Karry in late 1983. Except 781, the others reopened as KnK's in January 1984.
    Grand Union started a price war with KnK in July 1983 and lost... badly.
    So much so, KnK took out a half-page ad in the St. Petersburg Times thanking Grand Union.
    704 and 753 are now Big Lots.
    775 no longer exists.
    781 remained closed because it was too close to another KnK. It no longer exists.
    783 is currently split between a local gym and a charter school.
    785 is now an Office Depot.
    The store in Largo, a former Kmart Foods/Big Star, opened in October 1978 and closed in 1982.

      Worked at GU #754 and E.Ocn Blvd from 1975 to 1982 and 3 W.Palm stores. Then at Big Star in 1982/3 in Tallahassee, FL and Thomasville, Ga.

    Do you have any information on Big Star Supermarket which was next to the K-Mart in Brandon? It is where, Chuck E Cheese is now and where Lucky's was supposed to be. (I wonder who will be going in it.) Thanks...

    Do have any info on Zayre stores and if you do could you list them. Im wondering about Zayre in Winter Haven between Chain O Lakes Park and the old Winter Haven Mall. The Zayre was in a shopping center with a KnK...

    There was a store in Hollywood at one point that clsoed befroe 1983. It was on Hollywood Boulevard if I'm not mistaken around 28th.
