Food Lion Florida Store List

Food Lion first entered Florida in the late 1980's, beginning with a cluster of stores around the Jacksonville area. As the 90's began, Food Lion was able to penetrate themselves into much of Florida, with stores from Tallahassee to Jacksonville in the Panhandle, and from Jacksonville to Broward County in the Peninsula (and in most areas in between). Food Lion bought out Tampa-based Kash n' Karry in 1996, expanding their Florida presence (however this list will only focus on 'Food Lion' branded locations). In 1999, all remaining Food Lion stores in Florida outside of Northeast and North Central Florida (Daytona Beach-St. Augustine-Gainesville-Jacksonville area) were rebranded into Kash n' Karry stores. The majority of the Food Lion stores rebranded to Kash n' Karry were closed by 2004. In 2012, Food Lion announced they were closing all of their remaining Florida locations after increased pressure from Publix and Walmart got the best of them. Food Lion struggled to gain shoppers during their entire time in Florida due to their unusual format and somewhat obscurity here. The following list should be every Food Lion store that operated in Florida from the late 1980's through 2012, including a few unbuilt stores I uncovered:

  1. That's interesting that Food Lion wanted a store in Panama City Beach, in the old Kmart Plaza! I do recall reading an archived news article on the opening of that Kmart in Nov. 1990. It was stated that there would be more construction added to the plaza, but never came to fruition. Food Lion may have done Ok in that location up until 2005. In 2005 a huge new flyover bridge was erected to relieve congestion from the juncture of US Hwy 98 and Front Beach Rd to the Hathaway Bridge. The new flyover project really stifled business for the Panama City Beach Kmart. Now it all makes sense!

    1. I thought you'd be interested in that PCB location! Glad it cleared that up for you too. There were actually a few Kmart/Food Lion combo shopping centers that were supposed to be built in Florida, but in the end usually only the Kmart was built. The PCB Food Lion was to face Wildwood Road in an addition that angled down from the existing end of the small strip of stores that comes out the side of the old Kmart. Neither of the two shopping centers at the base of that ramp look to be doing good anymore, so I'm sure the diversion of traffic would have killed the Food Lion, if it didn't close prior to that as they began to retract from their outlying areas.

  2. Haines City, FL did have a Food Lion. The address was 35922 US 27. It is now the home of Dollar General Market.

    1. I knew that building housed a Kash n' Karry at one point, but the look of it seemed strange for a Food Lion, and looked more like an older Kash n' Karry. Do you know if that store converted into a Kash n' Karry from Food Lion, or did Food Lion open in an old Kash n' Karry (which would be ironic if that were the case)?

    1. Another Pub Lion! However, I have a feeling Publix will be doing much more work to convert Food Lion #2139 into Publix #1617 than we saw with turning Food Lion #828 into Publix #1102.

    2. That former Food Lion is completely demolished. Publix #1617 is being built from the ground up!

  5. Very interesting Food Lion was going to open in PCB, since I work at Winn Dixie now, it's a cultural shock to me coming from Metro Atlanta knowing that Winn Dixie in Paulding County became a short lived Food Lion out of the 2 locations they had left, and the 3rd one of course became a Rocket Lanes alternative called Stars and Strikes, but it would be great to see the old Kmart become something once again now that Toys R Us is going badly under like a lot of places besides Kmart have. 🤔

    1. The PCB Food Lion would have been their westernmost location in Florida. With the intersection reconfiguration in front of the Kmart, that building is probably a tough sell to a new tenant though. Something may happen there eventually, but any reuse probably won't be for retail.

  6. Winn Dixie is closing on November 1st 2020 in Orlando Florida at 12500 Lake Underhill Rd, in Waterford Lakes Village. What I recommend is for Food Lion is to come back to Central Florida and they should buy Winn Dixie and be the first location to open in Central Florida because Orlando and Daytona already brought back Miami Grill.

  7. I miss the Food Lion that used to be in my town of Alachua, Florida. I wish they wouldn't take the good stores away.
