A quick post for everyone tonight - as you may have heard, Big Lots announced recently that they're in pretty deep financial troubles, warning investors of a potential bankruptcy. As part of trying to hold off or stall a bankruptcy filing, Big Lots announced the closure of 35 to 40 stores in 2024 per their official statement quoted in that linked article, however, it appears the number of stores targeted for closure at the moment is much higher than that. From what I've found, it was revealed that 11 Floridian Big Lots stores are closing at this time, with multiple closures announced in additional states as well. While Big Lots has not published a complete cohesive list of closures, closing stores have been tagged on the company's store locator. Going through the 106 Florida stores listed on the website, these were the 11 closings I found announced in July 2024 - a smattering of small, older stores and some stores only a few years old:
Update 8/2/2024 - More store closures announced, bringing the total number of locations in Florida closing to 26. This is all part of a store closure wave that is now totaling 293 closures nationwide.

I didn't check all of PA, but the only one in my area closing is Clifton Heights - which only opened in 2022! I guess that would fall into the "only a few years old" category. It's a little small, though, being one of four stores in a former Kmart. I guess it just didn't get popular and they need to get rid of it.
ReplyDeletePer the list Retail Adventures published (which I added above as an update), Clifton Heights and Exton are the two Big Lots stores closing in PA right now, so both were Philly-area locations. The Clewiston Big Lots that's closing is about the same age as Clifton Heights (opening around 2022), and Boca Raton and Bonita Springs are also from the 2020's as well. Boca Raton and Bonita Springs are fairly well-off areas where Big Lots probably never had much appeal, and Clewiston is a fairly small town (what at least has a Walmart to fill the void). I wonder if a lot of Big Lots newer stores haven't been popular and just confused people as to what kind of a store it was trying to be.
DeleteI checked out all of the Houston locations using AFB's method and I don't see any that are closing at this time. That said, at least two Big Lots in my area closed towards the end of last year so it is not like we are down Big Lots around here. The one closest to me, in the former Kroger Superstore II Greenhouse, is still around. We'll see if any of these stores will be around for much longer though. I'm sure if Big Lots does collapse, it'll be a big story here at MFR!
ReplyDeleteAnother person in the retail community put together a nationwide Big Lots closure list (which I added in my post above as an update), and surprisingly, Texas has no closures at a moment - quite surprising for such a large state. I'm not surprised a few closed in Houston in last year's wave, but I guess those closures were suffice for now. I actually visited one of the closing Florida stores today, and I will keep my eye out for any more news (especially if the entire chain goes down, which could be the case).
DeleteHere in Upstate NY, only the Queensbury location is on the chopping block. It is a newer location that only opened two years ago. Quite shocking how few have closed up here (we already lost Colonie and Hudson).
ReplyDeleteThat said, it is only a matter of time before some of the grittier liquidation stores end up with their fixtures.
I'm surprised how few closures there are in New York this time, and only one of those closures being upstate. However, who knows if more closures are to come too. A lot of the closures around the country seem to be newer stores like Queensbury, so it seems like the newer format hasn't paid off.
